Project Overview
Bega Valley Shire Council is planning to expand our early education and care services in Bega and Eden to meet community need and support increased access to early learning for children across the shire.
The project began in 2022 with a comprehensive review of Council’s children’s services, which identified an opportunity to expand service provision in response to growing demand for early childhood education and care across the Bega Valley Shire. Further studies in 2024 and 2025, including a feasibility study, investigated potential sites for the expansion.
Preferred locations for two new purpose-built childcare centres have now been endorsed as the South East Regional Hospital grounds in Bega and 112-114 Imlay street in Eden, near the library. Each centre is proposed to cater for up to 118 children.
The centres will help address ongoing shortages in childcare places across the region, where existing services are operating at or near capacity and many families are experiencing difficulty accessing suitable early learning and childcare options. Increasing service availability will also support workforce participation by enabling more parents and carers to return to work or increase their hours.
With the feasibility study and preferred site identification now complete, Council is well placed to progress the project to the next stage, which is heavily dependent on seeking funding support from the state and federal governments.
This work will continue alongside detailed planning, design development and ongoing stakeholder engagement to ensure the proposed centres meet community needs and deliver high-quality, fit-for-purpose facilities for the future.

Initial phase $250,000 - Feasibility Study and Workforce Strategy. Council will require significant state and federal funding to proceed.
A.4 Provide and support aged, disability and community services that enhance people’s quality of life.
B.3 Deliver local education, training and learning opportunities that meet skills gaps in our key industry sectors.
B.4 Provide education and employment pathways that help young people living in the Bega Valley Shire.
C.4 Adopt sustainable design principles in the planning of our urban areas and infrastructure provision and encourage sustainable buildings and lifestyles.
D.3 Plan and provide for improved access to community facilities and leisure and recreation assets that will meet current and future needs.
E.3 Government services have well-governed financial and strategic management processes to ensure ongoing viability and value for money
E.4 Government services have strong relationships with other organisations and across all levels of government to advocate for our communities.
